Your brain has two modes of operation, and only one runs at a time. Learning anything hard requires moving between them. Neither mode is the productive one. The alternation is.
Oakley’s metaphor: imagine a thought as a ball on a pinball table, leaving a trail wherever it travels.
In focused mode the bumpers sit close together. The ball bounces rapidly around one small region, mostly along trails already laid by things you’ve thought before. So focused mode is good at running a known procedure and bad at finding an idea you don’t already have. The geometry of the table won’t let the ball reach it.
In diffuse mode the bumpers are far apart. The ball travels much further, hits fewer of them, and can reach parts of the table focused mode never touches. That range is where an unfamiliar connection gets made.
You need both tables, and the ball is only ever on one of them. There is no mode where you focus intently and range widely at once.
Entering focused mode is trivial. Turn your attention to the thing and it starts. Entering diffuse mode is the harder direction, because you can’t do it by trying. You do it by letting go. Sleep, showers, walks, exercise, being a passenger, music without words. Oakley’s shorthand is the bed, the bath, and the bus.
Focusing hard on something unrelated works too. Switching from the algebra to the geography puts you in diffuse mode with respect to the algebra. It’s weaker than a genuine break, and it costs you rest you’ll need later.
This is the part worth keeping, because the two look identical from the inside and have opposite fixes.
If you never caught the initial explanation, nothing is loaded and a break gives diffuse mode nothing to work with. Go back to the notes, the worked examples, a second explanation. If you did load it and the problem still won’t move, more focused effort just retraces the same trails, and the break is the technique.
Focus for roughly ten to fifteen minutes of real effort before you consider switching. Then break long enough to get your mind completely off the material. Five or ten minutes is usually enough, and longer breaks mostly cost you your evening.
Two consequences worth planning around. Start with your hardest subject, not your easiest, so you have the rest of the day to cycle back to it. Leave it until you’re tired and there’s no room left for diffuse work. And don’t judge the method on one switch. Several rounds of load-and-release is the normal shape of solving something hard, not a sign the technique failed.

The explanation is already loaded, so more focused effort retraces the same trails. Diffuse mode only starts once you take your attention off the problem, which makes the break the productive move rather than the lazy one.
2A colleague explains a new algorithm. You didn't follow it, and now you're stuck. Will a walk help?
Diffuse mode recombines material focused mode has already loaded. With nothing loaded there is nothing to recombine. The fix is another explanation, not a break.
3Can you run both modes at once to get the benefits of each?
The modes are mutually exclusive: two pinball tables, one ball. That's why alternating is the technique, and why 'focus harder while staying open' isn't an option.
4You try one focused/diffuse switch on a hard problem, it doesn't crack, and you conclude the method doesn't work for you. What's the error?
Oakley's warning: don't judge a learning strategy on one trial. Insight usually arrives after several rounds of loading in focused mode and releasing into diffuse mode.
